Combatting Migrant Exploitation Act 2026 Enacted
New sweeping legislation strengthens transparency in the employer sponsorship framework.
The Migration Amendment (Combatting Migrant Exploitation) Act 2026 has been officially enacted by the Parliament.
It introduces critical, sweeping amendments designed to strengthen transparency and accountability in the employer sponsorship framework. A key provision allows the Department of Home Affairs to publicly publish information about approved work sponsors, aimed at deterring exploitative practices and allowing migrants to verify the legitimacy of their employers.
Furthermore, the Act introduces massive financial penalties for employers caught exploiting temporary visa holders. Visa cancellation powers have also been adjusted so that victims of exploitation are not punished with automatic cancellation if they report their abusive employers to the authorities.
