Understanding Parent Migration
Permanent Parent Visas are the primary way for Australian citizens and residents to bring their parents to live with them indefinitely. These visas provide parents with the stability of permanent residency, access to Medicare, and the right to live anywhere in Australia.
The Australian parent migration system is based on a "queue." Because demand is much higher than the number of visas available each year, wait times can be very long. Families usually choose between the Contributory path (faster but requires a high fee) and the Non Contributory path (low cost but a very long wait).
We specialize in helping families navigate the critical Balance of Family Test and choosing the right strategy for their parents' unique age and financial circumstances.
The Mandatory Requirement
Almost all parent visas require you to pass the Balance of Family Test.
Balance of Family Test
To be eligible, the parent must show that:
- At least half of their children are Australian citizens or permanent residents living in Australia.
- OR, more of their children live in Australia than in any other single country.

Strategic Advice
Because of the long wait times, strategic planning is essential:
- Aged Advantage: If parents apply onshore as 'Aged' parents, they can often stay in Australia on a Bridging Visa throughout the wait.
- Queue Jumping: You can start with a 103 visa and switch to a 143 contributory visa later to speed up the process.
- Assurance of Support: Be prepared to provide an 'Assurance of Support' bond to the government during the final stages.
Application Costs
*The large contributory installment is only paid at the final stage of processing. Additional costs for medicals, police clearances, and translations apply.
