Understanding the 482 Visa

The Subclass 482 Skills in Demand Visa is a strategic initiative by the Australian Government to mitigate domestic skill shortages. It enables approved businesses to source and employ specialized talent from around the globe on a temporary basis.

Introduced on December 7, 2024, the SID visa serves as the modern successor to the Temporary Skills Shortage (TSS) visa. Transitional arrangements are in place to honor any TSS applications lodged before this cut off date.

Our consultancy provides comprehensive strategic advice throughout the lifecycle of the SID visa, ensuring strict compliance with all regulatory criteria for a frictionless approval process.

Available Options

The Three SID Visa Pathways

Identify the route that best fits your occupational background and compensation bracket.

Core Skills Pathway

Created to tackle national talent shortages by facilitating the sponsorship of professionals whose occupations appear on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).

Permitted Stay

Granted for up to 4 years (or 5 years if holding a Hong Kong passport).

Key Criteria

Requires an occupation on the CSOL, a salary that meets or exceeds the Core Skills Income Threshold (CSIT), and a minimum of 12 months full time equivalent work history over the last 5 years.

Language Standards

A minimum of IELTS 5.0 (or equivalent) is mandated.

Permanent Residency

Transitions to permanent residency via the Subclass 186 (ENS) visa are possible once qualifying criteria are fulfilled.

Roadmap

The Application Lifecycle

A transparent view of how a candidate is sponsored, from initial business validation through to the final visa grant.

01

Secure Sponsorship

The enterprise must first lodge an application to be recognized as an approved sponsor by the Department of Home Affairs.

02

Submit Nomination

The business nominates the exact role. This step usually involves Labour Market Testing to prove the necessity of hiring from overseas.

03

Lodge Application

The prospective employee files their personal visa application, attaching all relevant health, character, and competency documents.

04

Final Decision

Upon review and approval by immigration authorities, the visa is issued and employment can commence.

Employer Obligations

Companies bear significant responsibility in the SID process, including:

  • Gaining Approval: Meeting all stringent business sponsorship criteria.
  • Labour Market Testing: Providing evidence that the vacancy could not be satisfied locally.
  • Nomination Integrity: Ensuring the role is genuine and the income complies with thresholds.

Including Dependents

The SID framework fully supports bringing spouses, de facto partners, and children. They are classed as Subsequent Entrants.

  • Dependent status must be clearly established.
  • Evidentiary documents (marriage/birth certificates) are required.
  • Dependents are subject to the same medical and character screenings.
